Geum river basin
The mainstream of Geum river
Geum river is just about 85km straightly in north-west direction from the source to the estuary, but it is 396km
according to the river length.
The source starts from one of the high mountains of the Sobaek Mountains, called Mt. Sinmu, in Subun-ri,
Jangsu-eup, Jangsu-gun in Jeollabuk-do, and as it flows to the northern direction, it joins with Namdaecheon(riv.),
Bonghwangcheon(riv.), Chogangcheon(riv.)
and Bocheongcheon(riv.).
At the northern Daejeon, Daecheong-
dam is located.

Rivers flow from the dam to the
western direction. After it joins with
Gabcheon(riv.), it joins with the biggest
river in this region, called Mihocheon(riv.),
near Mt.Wol , and then it flows
to the north-western direction between
the Charyung Mountains and the
Noryung Mountains.
Moreover, it joins with Jungancheon(riv.)
and Yugucheon(riv.).

Near Ganggyung, it joins with
Nonsancheon(riv.), and it is remained in
Geumgangho at a time.
Then, it flows into West Sea after it
flows via the water supply flood gate
of Geum river estuary dyke and
between Gunsan and Janghang.

Mihocheon(riv.)
Mihocheon(riv.) is located at the center of the northern Geum river basin. The northern and eastern parts are
close to the Han-river basin, the northwestern part is close to Anseongcheon(riv.) and the southern Sapgyocheon(riv.) basin is close to the rest of the Geum river basin. The area of basin is 185㎢, 18.8% of whole part of the Geum
river basin. The river length of Mihocheon(riv.) is 87.3km.

The head of river is the end of northern basin. It joins with Baekgokcheon(riv.), which passes through
Baekgok-ji and Jincheon-eup at Chopyeong-myun in Jincheon-gun, as it starts from Mt. Mai, where is the
joint of 3 division parts, Anseong-gun and Icheon-gun in Gyeonggi-do, and Eumseong-gun in
Chuncheongbuk-do, and it flows down straightly in the southern part.

It makes meandering from the meeting point of Baekgokcheon(riv.) to that point of Bogangcheon(riv.), and joins with Musimcheon(riv.) and Byeongcheoncheon(riv.).
The stream joins with Jocheon(riv.), which flows in western direction and passes through Sejong-si.
Then, the direction is changed suddenly, and it flows in the southern direction. Also, it joins with Wolhacheon(riv.)
(the right bank of a river), Bongamcheon(riv.) (right), Yonghocheon(riv.) (right) and Yeongicheon(riv.) (right) in order, and it flows into the mainstream of Geum river at Sejong-si.
Gabcheon(riv.)
Gabcheon(riv.) starts from Mt. Daedun (EL.877.7m) located in the division of chungcheongbuk-do and Jeollabuk-do. Then, the direction is changed to the northern direction, and it joins with Dogyecheon(riv.), Geumgokcheon(riv.) and Maehocheon(riv.) in order. After that, it passes through Daejeon. After it joins with Yuseongcheon(riv.) and the first branch of Gabcheon(riv.), called Yudeungcheon(riv.), it flows into Geum river by getting out of Daejeon. The area of basin is 687㎢, and the national river part is 73.7 km of 95.6km of the river length of main stream.
Nonsancheon(riv.)
Nonsancheon(riv.) starts from the edge of Mt. Mumyeong, and as it flows in northwestern direction, it passes
through Jullabuk-do, Chuncheongbuk-do and The Tapjeong. It joins with Wangamcheon(riv.), which starts from the
south of this basin, and flows in northern direction.
It flows in northwestern direction continuously, and joins with Eoseongcheon(riv.) that starts from the ridge of Mt.
Kwanum, passes through Kyeroyng reservoir, and flows in the southern direction.
From here, the direction is changed to Southwestern. It passes through an enormous field, and joins with
Kangkyeongcheon(riv.) that starts from the edge of Mt. Yonghwa and flows
in the northwestern direction. Finally, it flows into the mainstream of the Geum river.
Sabgyocheon(riv.) basin
The mainstream of Sabgyocheon(riv.)
Sabgyocheon(riv.) is located in the middle-western part of the Korean peninsula and starts from Gireogijae(EL.344.9m) in Hongseong-si. It joins with Muhancheon(riv.) and Gokgyocheon(riv.), and flows into the West Sea. The area of this basin is 1,645.1㎢, and the river length is 63.5km. The eastern and southern parts are close to the Geum river, the northern part is close to the Asanman and Anseongcheon(riv.), and the western part is close to the Taean-peninsula. The mainstream of Sabgyocheon(riv.) forms the hill sides, the Yedang plain is located, and the average elevation is EL.53m. Most parts except the farm lands in Muhancheon(riv.) and Gokgyocheon(riv.) forms a mountainous geographical feature, and the average elevation of Muhancheon(riv.) is EL.103.1m and that of Gokgyocheon(riv.) is EL.104.1m. The channel was enforced building an embankment and constructing a shortcut in 1920s, so the meanderiy channel which had bad conditions was straightened, and the flowing water was improved smoothly. Nodong-ri, Daeheung-myun in Yesangun which is the central basin and the upper part of Muhancheon(riv.) has the reservoir established by 1962 for supplying water for farming and contolling a flood. Moreover, at the estuary of Sabgyocheon(riv.), an embankment, Sabgyoho (3,360m), was constructed by the Agriculture Promotion Corporation on 1979, and the water is used for agriculture in the northwestern Chungnam. Meanwhile, by setting Sabgyo embankment for standard, river length of Gireogijae section, the source of Sabgyocheon(riv.) mainstream, is 51.5km on the left, that of Mt. Baekwol (EL.560m), the source of Muhancheon(riv.), is 63.5km on the left, and that of Mt. Guksa (EL.403m), the source of Gogyocheon(riv.), is 49.5km on the left. The real outflow of the river depends on Muhancheon(riv.), the longest extension of river length. So, Muhancheon(riv.) is the mainstream of Sabgyocheon(riv.) hydraulically - hydrologically.
Muhancheon(riv.)
Muhancheon(riv.) flows into the inner-right side of the mid-lower stream located in the northern Chungcheongnam-do. It forms the eastern river system at the mountain range connected to Mt. Dogo(EL.534.4m) and Mt.Janghak(EL. 400.0m), the northwestern basin connected to Mt. Munbak(EL.337.8m), Mt. Obong(EL.380.0m) and Mt. Palbong(EL.207.4m), and the north southern basin connected to Mt. Chorong(EL.340.1m) and Mt. Palbong (EL.207.4m). Also, the Charyeong Mountains is put the north southern area, and the Yedang reservoir for supplying water for agricultural use is located in the mid-area. The upper area of the reservoir forms a gorge and the lower area of that forms a huge farm land.
Gokgyocheon(riv.)
Gokgyocheon(riv.) flows into the right bank of the lower stream located in the northern Chuncheongnam-do. Mt. Tejo (EL.420.0m), Mt. Gyeongam(EL.319.1m) and Mt. Goryeo(EL.307.2m) at the eastern area are joined with Mt. Guksa (EL.402.7m), the ridge of Gechi(EL.402.7m) and Mt. Bongsu(EL.534.4m) at the southern basin and connected to Mt. Deokam(EL.260.5m), Mt. Sambong(EL.140.2m), and Mt. Yeongin(EL.363.9m), Mt. Guksa(EL.222.5m), Mt. Yongwa(EL.238.4m) and Mt. Notea(EL.534.4m) are put around at the northern area. The most both banks of rivers forms the large farm lands except that Onyang-si at the inner-right side of the mid-basin and Cheonan-si at the Cheonancheon(riv.) are located.
